The IPPC Secretariat is delighted to announce to the plant health community the release of a new publication entitled “Field survey guidance for Bactrocera spp.”

This guidance document for field surveys, created through the IPPC’s Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP), outlines precise protocols for the technical staff of NPPOs to monitor and identify Bactrocera spp. (Fruit fly), a significant pest that severely impacts fruit crops like mango.

Featuring visual aids and suggested fruit fly traps, this guide is designed to improve the effective detection, collection of samples, and identification of fruit fly species, thereby informing phytosanitary decisions and protecting plant health. The consistent application of these protocols, in conjunction with APP’s digital pest surveillance tools, will bolster early warning systems and enhance Africa’s resilience against pests that hold regulatory, economic, and environmental importance.
